Climb the east stairs where the pilgrim’s way begins, walk the first gallery clockwise between carved panels, rise through the galleries to the round terraces of perforated stupas, and switch on the line to Pawon and Mendut.
The base, the three parts of the monument and the number of stupas come from published figures; the heights of the levels, the terraces’ sizes and the stairs are approximate, the reliefs are our own simple outlines and the statues plain stand-ins; the stone is drawn in code, not photographed. Gold markers open notes on what you see, including what is measured, what is approximate and what is unknown. Objects in the cases are renditions, not replicas.
